Hello, I’m Peter Mayes

Artist Statement:

I simply put reality into the screen. Whether it’s the composition of a photograph, a virtual 3D model, or merely 64-bit pixels; squares and rectangles are my paintbrushes and the screen is my canvas. My eyes open ideas and my tools turn them into conversation. I choose to see what others see and let that reflect on them in my work. I stride myself on not just taking images, but making images. I will work with props, assets, actors, and more to ensure my ideas come to fruition. I look to create experiences rather than just capture them.

Through choice of thought and design, I also strive to utilize AI models in Stable Diffusion to enhance the potential of my imagery. Whether simple touch-ups on my photography, simply sketched ideas, or entire collaborative designs; AI is a tool I chose to explore. As technology evolves and expands, so does my craft as I intend to move forward with AI rather than get brushed away in the storm it’s caused.

Artist Bio:

My earliest memories in the interest of technology as an artistic medium go back to when I would steal my mom’s old Sony Handycam. I would use it without even hitting the record button. I was more fascinated with the zoom and the fuzzy-static look the lens gave the world. My parents also had this computer that would run this pixelated video of a volcano erupting and it blew my mind as a four-year-old child.

These memories were shelved in my head and it wasn’t until much later in life, through love of popular media like movies and video games that I bought my first camera at the late age of 16. Returning to my routes of capturing digital images, I began picking up small gigs and working on small projects that slowly led to me diving into professional photography at the University of North Texas. With the new media department right next to the photography department, my interest bled and melted the two together, with the eventual switch to New Media as my major. Now, I seek to further my knowledge in the virtual world with my sights on grad school at Southern Methodist University’s Guildhall program where I plan to further develop skills in virtual environmental design.
